Some published sources incorrectly give Nathaniel B. Baker's death date as 11 SEP 1876. The correct date is 13 SEP 1876.

Nathaniel Bradley Baker, born on September 29, 1818, in Henniker, New Hampshire, was an influential American politician and military leader. He received a liberal education before entering Harvard University, from which he graduated in 1839. After studying law under Franklin Pierce, Asa Fowler, and Charles H. Peaslee, he was admitted to the Bar in 1842.

Baker began his political career as a Democrat, serving as Clerk of the Merrimack County Court of Common Pleas in 1845, and later as Merrimack County Clerk. He was also a co-owner of a Democratic newspaper, the New Hampshire Patriot. In 1851, he was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives and was chosen as Speaker of the House.

In 1854, Baker was elected as the 24th governor of New Hampshire, serving a single one-year term. His term was marked by the legislature's failure to pass resolutions condemning the Missouri Compromise and the Kansas–Nebraska Act.

After his term as governor, Baker moved to Clinton, Iowa, where he continued to practice law. He was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 1859. His increasingly antislavery views led him to join the Republican Party. At the start of the American Civil War, he was appointed as adjutant general of the Iowa Militia, a position he held until his death on September 13, 1876.
