English poet and politician
During the English Civil War in 1643, Edmund Waller sided with the Royalists and was involved in a plot for an armed uprising to sieze key points in London and let the Royalist army in the city. He was the sole survivor of what was later termed “Waller's Plot.” His fellow conspirators were all executed when they refused to betray the principles, but Waller sang like a bird and was spared.
