  • The parents of Eugene Derouen are said to be Gustave and Estelle (Garry) Derouen. The problem is that Gustave was only 12 years old when Eugene was born. He didn't marry Estelle Garry until 1871 when Eugene was already 10 years old. Also census records indicate Gustave and Estelle Garry were white while Eugene was black. A death record for Gustave also indicates he was white and census records for Estelle indicate both of her parents were white. Also a death record for Gustave indicates he was white. While mixed race or Creole couples may be common in Louisiana, two white parents having a black child is not.
