  • Stanton Luke is 15/16ths Cherokee. In the 1900 U.S. Census taken in the Indian Territory of the Cherokee Nation in what is now Oklahoma, under the section titled Special Inquiries Relating to Indians, Stanton's father Thomas Luke is listed as being 7/8ths blood Cherokee with his father being mixed blood and his mother being full blood. Thomas's children are listed as 15/16ths blood Cherokee indicating Thomas's wife Nannie is also a full blood Cherokee. Her birthplace is listed as the Indian Territory. This would make Stanton Luke 15/16ths Cherokee.

    Stanton Luke was born in Texanna prior to Oklahoma's statehood when the town was still within Indian Territory. The town is said to have been named Texanna for a settlement of Texas Cherokees. It would appear that Stanton Luke's family was among those settlers as his father Thomas Luke was born in Texas.

    There are some that claim the descendants of Stanton Luke are not Cherokee at all, but that they are actually Creek. Some of the neighbors of Stanton's family in the 1900 U.S. Census are listed as Chickasaw which is a tribe that's related to the Creek, but Stanton's family are all clearly labeled as Cherokee. Looking through the entire census for the township they were living in, no one is listed as belonging to the Creek tribe. Only members of the Chickasaw or Cherokee tribes are listed.
