  • I have seen much speculation in online pedigrees that claim that the parents of James Sutton were Joseph and Mary (Moss) Sutton of Perquimans County, North Carolina. Others claim that James Sutton's father was another James Sutton whose direct line goes back through multiple James Sutton until the immigrant James Sutton in 1650. I've seen no real evidence to support either of these theories.

    Lastly there is a claim that James Sutton is the son of Joseph Sutton and Mary Sands, and that Joseph is the son of Joseph Sutton and Parthenia Durant. The problem is that Joseph, the son of Joseph Sutton and Parthenia Durant is the Joseph who married Mary Moss above. The Joseph Sutton who married Mary Sands is from New York and not North Carolina. The New York Joseph Sutton may be the son of John Sutton of Lincolnshire, England.

    So for now the parentage of James Sutton remains unknown.
