    • Joshua Hempstead is noted for having written a diary from 1711 until his death in 1758 that is considered one of the best sources about colonial life in New London, Connecticut. The diary also details the life of a slave in the household named Adam Jackson.

      The Joshua Hempstead house in New London, Connecticut, is one of the oldest and most well documented houses in New England that survives to this day. It is one of the few buildings that survived the great fire of 1781 that burned most of New London.
