The article "Marriages in The Town of Bridgewater previous to its Division" (see NEHGR 21:225-8) listed the marriage "James Cary and Mary Shaw, Jan. 4, 1681." However the actual marriage record does not give Mary's maiden name. Proof that Mary was actually Mary Standish comes from a deed dated 16 April 1731 that contains the signature of Mary Cary releasing her right in the estate of her sister Martha Standish. (see MF5G(Standish), 14:15). Also, John and Mary (Standish) Cary had a son James who married Sarah Shaw, daughter of Joseph and Judith (Whitmarsh) Shaw. It's very possible that confusion with the wives of father and son caused the misidentification of the maiden name of Mary as Shaw.
