  • William McClung Paxton's book The Paxtons (1903) states that family tradition says that Agnes Gilmore, daughter of Robert Gilmore, married Jonathan Paxton. He refers to a “bungling record” that gives her name as Nancy. However, the marriage record in Rockbridge County, Virginia, gives her name as Agnes, daughter of William Gilmore not Robert Gilmore. The 1850 census also lists her name as Agnes not Nancy, but her tombstone just two years later lists her name as Nancy. As a result, William McClung Paxton gives her name as Nancy Agnes Gilmore.
