In the Spring of 1860, William Davis headed to the Rocky Mountains as part of the Pike's Peak gold rush in Colorado. He and his companions visited the “Gregory Diggings” as the earliest discoveries were called. There they were able to sell their large stock of provisions at high prices after which William Davis accompanied their two wagons back for more provisions. But by Fall, he and his companions, poorer in pocket, were ready to call it quits and head back home.
