  • In an article titled "A Ripken Ancestor Table" in the Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin (1992, Vol. 33, No. 4, p. 781), the birthdate of Columbus Sheridan Morris is given as 26 JUN 1866. However the marriage date for his parents is given as 18 APR 1867. So the question arises as to whether Columbus Morris was an illegitimate child, a son of his father's first wife Mary Calder, or is there an error with his birthdate. The ahnentafel chart does contain errors in the dates for other individuals so it is very possible the birthdate is in error. Census records from 1880 through 1920 would seem to support the conclusion that he was born after his parents' marriage in 1867. The 1900 census gives his birthdate as JUL 1868. Comparing his brother William W. Morris's census dates and the fact that his brother is listed as a year older in the 1880 census, it would appear that William Morris probably was born in 1868 and Columbus Sheridan Morris in 1869. Further evidence is needed to definitively sort this out.
