    This Ira Bates should not be confused with the Ira Bates born in 1796 in Chesterfield, Massachusetts. Records indicate that this Ira Bates was born circa 1792 in Savoy, Massachusetts. The only Bates family in Savoy at that time was that of Comfort Bates and Sarah Brown.

    In the 1800 census, Comfort Bates has 3 male children in his household. The two oldest male children have been identified by primary records as Otis and Dexter Bates. The third male child falls into the under 10 category. This third male child is consistent with Ira Bates.

    By the 1810 census, Otis Bates has moved to Stephentown, New York, and appears as a head of household there. The household for Comfort Bates continues to show children consistent with Dexter and Ira Bates.

    In the 1820 census, Dexter and Ira Bates appear as heads of households in Savoy confirming the identity of Ira Bates as the third son of Comfort Bates and Sarah Brown.
