- Notes:
The following story is told by a grandchild of Bathsheba Day about when she was just a baby in 1755:
“Upon an alarm of Indians coming, Mr. Day (her father) hastened home, saddled his horse and told his wife to quickly make ready to ride to the Fort. Mr. Day taking little Ruth in his arms, Mrs. Day on the pillion behind, tightly grasped a meal sack, into which they had thrust the one year old baby Bathsheba, rode four miles at great speed to the Fort; the meal sack dangling from the saddle; reaching the Fort in safety, upon opening the sack the baby was found to be head downwards,” but fortunately my grandmother suffered no serious injury from this perilous escapade.
