Seth Low was a distinguished American statesman who made significant contributions as the Mayor of New York, the Mayor of Brooklyn, and the President of Columbia University. He was born at Brooklyn, New York, in 1850 into a prominent family known for their civic involvement. Low developed a deep sense of responsibility towards public service from an early age.

After completing his education at Columbia University, Low began his political career in Brooklyn, where he served as the Mayor from 1881 to 1885. During his tenure, he focused on urban development, public education, and social reforms, earning him a reputation as an effective and progressive leader.

After his successful stint in Brooklyn, Low assumed the presidency of his alma mater, Columbia University, in 1890. Under his guidance, the university underwent significant expansion, including the acquisition of new land and the establishment of new schools and academic programs. In 1895, Low donated $1 million to build the Low Memorial Library at the center of Columbia University's Morningside Heights campus in Upper Manhattan. It opened in 1897 and was named in memory of his father.

Low's leadership skills did not go unnoticed, and in 1902, he became Mayor of New York City. As the chief executive of the nation's most populous city, Low tackled issues ranging from public health to infrastructure, seeking to improve the lives of all New Yorkers. He died at Bedford Hills, New York, on September 17, 1916.
