U.S. Senator from Illinois
Who is Tammy Duckworth?
Tammy Duckworth is a United States Senator from Illinois. She is a purple heart Iraqi war veteran who lost both of her legs when she was shot down in Iraq in 2004. She retired from the military ten years later with a rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Tammy Duckworth also served as an Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the Obama administration, and as a Congresswoman in the U. S. House of Representatives before becoming a U.S. Senator.
Tammy Duckworth has achieved a few historic milestones. She is one of the first female Black Hawk pilots to fly in combat, the first Thai-American woman elected to Congress, the first person born in Thailand to be elected to Congress, the first female double amputee in the U.S. Senate, and the first Senator to give birth while in office, and that was labeled a geriatric pregnancy since she was over 50 at the time. She was said to be on former Vice President Joe Biden’s short list as a potential running mate in the presidential election in 2020.
Daughter of the American Revolution
Tammy Duckworth was born in Thailand to a Thai mother and an American father. Her ancestry became a big news item in 2016 after a televised debate with the incumbent Senator Mark Kirk. When she brought up the fact that her ancestors had fought in every American war since the revolution, Kirk remarked that he was surprised her ancestor would come all the way from Thailand to help George Washington. Kirk's remark spurred numerous genealogists to start researching her ancestry to determine if what she said was accurate. They discovered that she had a couple of ancestors who served in the Revolutionary War and that she was a member of the DAR. However, her connections to the Revolution are much more numerous than what was reported as she has no fewer than eight ancestors who served in the Revolution. She also has a couple of descents from Mayflower passenger John Howland.
