Alan Napier

TV and Movie Actor

Who was Alan Napier?

Alan Napier was an English actor who began his career on stage in West End theatre. He also performed in numerous British and American films from the 1930s to the 1960s, and in television in the 60s and 70s. However, it was one role in particular that Alan Napier is best remembered for, and that was as Alfred Pennyworth, the butler of Bruce Wayne (aka Batman) in the 1960s television show Batman. Alan Napier wrote his autobiography in the 1970s, but did not publish it at the time. Over two and a half decades after his death, the book was finally published in 2015 under the title Not Just Batman’s Butler.

Famous Kin

Alan Napier has a number of famous kin mostly due to his royal ancestry and his descents from Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Alfred the Great, and a couple of Magna Carta sureties. However, one particularly close relationship he has is with British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, a first cousin of Alan’s mother. Other relatively close kin include Scottish poet and author Sir Walter Scott, American patriot and Virginia Governor Patrick Henry, and English actress Tilda Swinton.
