Daniel Henry Chamberlain

76th Governor of South Carolina

Who was Daniel Chamberlain?

Daniel Henry Chamberlain was an American politician and lawyer who served as the governor of South Carolina from 1874 to 1877. Born in West Brookfield, Massachusetts in 1835, Chamberlain was educated at Amherst College and Harvard Law School. He moved to South Carolina in 1858 and began practicing law in Charleston. During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel.

After the war, Chamberlain became involved in politics and was elected governor of South Carolina in 1874 as a Republican during the Reconstruction era. He worked to establish a new state constitution and to improve the state's economy. He also supported education and worked to protect the rights of African Americans. Despite opposition from white supremacists, he remained committed to his beliefs and was reelected in 1876.

However, he was removed from office in 1877 during the “Redemption”, the period when white supremacists regained political control of the state and imposed Jim Crow laws. After leaving office, Chamberlain returned to his law practice and later moved to New York City where he continued to work as a lawyer until his death in 1913.
