Francis C. Barlow was an American Union Army major general during the American Civil War. Born on May 17, 1834 in New York City, Barlow was a lawyer before enlisting in the Union Army in 1861. He served as a division commander in several major battles, including Antietam and Gettysburg, and was known for his bravery and leadership skills on the battlefield. In 1864, he was promoted to the rank of major general and continued to serve in the Union Army until the end of the war. After the war, he returned to his legal career and became involved in politics, serving as a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention. Barlow is remembered as one of the most prominent and effective Union commanders of the American Civil War. He died January 11, 1896 at New York City.
