Who was Elia Kazan?

Elia Kazan was a Greek-American film and theater director. He was born Elia Kazantzoglou on September 7, 1909 in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire (now Istanbul, Turkey) and immigrated to the United States as a child. Kazan began his career as an actor in the 1930s before transitioning to directing. He is best known for his work on Broadway, where he directed several groundbreaking productions including "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "Death of a Salesman." He also directed several influential films, including "On the Waterfront" and "East of Eden," both of which won multiple Academy Awards. Kazan was a controversial figure due to his testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee during the McCarthy era, but he remains a highly regarded director for his contributions to the world of film and theater. Elia Kazan passed away on September 28, 2003 at the age of 94.
