Who is Bob Barker?

Bob Barker was born on December 12, 1923, in Darrington, Washington, and would go on to become one of the most iconic television game show hosts in history. He grew up on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota as he was 1/8th Sioux through his paternal grandmother Frances "Fannie" (Tackett) Barker whose own mother was 100% Sioux.

Barker enrolled at Drury College (now Drury University) to study economics and journalism. However, World War II interrupted his education and he became a Navy pilot. When the war ended, Barker returned to Drury to complete his education. His first taste of broadcasting came while he was still a student, working at KTTS as a disc jockey, announcer and newswriter.

Following his education, he went to Florida to work for another radio station for about a year, afterwhich he decided to try his luck in California, It was there while emceeing his radio show "The Bob Barker Show" in December, 1956, when he landed his breakthrough opportunity as the host of the game show "Truth or Consequences." His warm and friendly demeanor, coupled with his ability to keep contestants and audiences engaged, made him an instant hit.

In 1972, Bob Barker would cement his legacy as the iconic host of "The Price Is Right." The show's combination of thrilling games, big prizes, and Barker's charismatic hosting skills resonated with viewers across America. His famous sign-off phrase, "Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered," showcased his dedication to animal welfare and made him a beloved figure beyond the world of television.

Over the course of his impressive 35-year tenure as the host of "The Price Is Right," Barker earned numerous awards and accolades, including 19 Daytime Emmy Awards. He became synonymous with daytime television, attracting a broad and dedicated fan base that eagerly tuned in to see him every day.

Beyond his television career, Barker was also a philanthropist and animal rights advocate. His passionate support for animal welfare led him to donate millions to various animal organizations and establish his own foundation, the DJ&T Foundation, which continues to promote animal welfare after his retirement.
