Apollo 11 Astronaut
Who is Buzz Aldrin?
Buzz Aldrin is a former astronaut and the second person to walk on the moon. He was a member of the Gemini 12 and Apollo 11 missions in space, and he piloted the Apollo 11 lunar module to the first manned landing on the moon. Prior to becoming an astronaut, Buzz Aldrin was a fighter pilot during the Korean War where he flew 66 combat missions and shot down two Soviet MiG-15 aircraft. In recent years, Aldrin has been an outspoken critic of NASA's objective of returning to the moon and an ardent supporter of a manned mission to Mars. In 2013 he authored a book titled “Mission to Mars” in which he outlines his plan for how we would be able to colonize Mars within the next couple of decades.
Buzz Aldrin has a couple of presidential connections in his family tree and one notable presidential contender. The presidents are Benjamin Harrison and Calvin Coolidge. The presidential contender is Stephen A. Douglas, the Illinois Senator who ran against Abraham Lincoln in the 1860 presidential election and is probably best remembered for the earlier Lincoln-Douglas debates.
A couple of literary greats with family connections to Buzz Aldrin are author Edgar Rice Burroughs and poet Emily Dickinson. Celebrity kin include actress Raquel Welch, actor Richard Gere, and Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model Kate Upton.
