Foster, who was the 32nd U.S. Secretary of State. John Foster Dulles was a key figure during the cold war supporting the French War in Indochina and advocating other aggressive actions to counter the spread of communism throughout the world. Prior to his term as Secretary of State, he was temporarily assigned to fill a vacancy as U.S. Senator from New York. A few months after being appointed, he lost a special election to fill the vacancy to his Democratic rival. Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C., was named for John Foster Dulles.
