Who was Henry Lee III?
Major-General Henry Lee III was the 9th Governor of Virginia and a cavalry officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He is probably best known by the nickname he earned during the war of “Light-Horse Harry”
Henry Lee is the father of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, grandfather of Virginia Governor Fitzhugh Lee, and 2nd cousin of Maryland Governor Thomas Sim Lee. His ancestry can be traced back to William the Conqueror, King Edward I and a number of Magna Carta Sureties including Henry de Bohun and Hugh le Bigod. His royal ancestry also includes kinship to the current royal family through Queen Elizabeth II and the late Princess Diana.
