Born Robert Preston Meservey, he was an American stage and film actor. He is probably best remembered for his role as Professor Harold Hill in the 1962 musical film The Music Man. It was a role that he previously played on Broadway and won a Tony Award for Best Actor in 1958. He is also fondly remembered for his role as the wagon master in the film epic How the West Was Won. In 1982 he was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the film Victor Victoria.
