    • Notes:
    • Thomas Smith was killed in a railroad accident in Shickshinny, Pennsylvania, in 1865. The following appeared in the Pittston Gazette on January 19, 1865:

Melancholy Rail Road Accident - On Monday last, as the morning passenger train from Scranton was passing around a curve near Shickshinny, one or more of the passenger cars were overturned by means of a broken rail in the road. Several persons were injured, but none except Mr. Thos. Smith, of Abington Centre were killed. Mr. Smith was standing upon the platform of one of the cars, and, seeing that it must go over, leaped off, and had scarcely touched the ground ere he was crushed almost to a jelly by the car falling upon him. Mr. Smith was an old resident of the county, and highly respected by all who knew him. His melancholy death will be universally regretted. A friend long acquainted with Mr. Smith says of him "that although he was somewhat stern and unpolished, yet under the surface he was one of the best men he ever knew."
