    • The parentage of Nancy Shaw is circumstantial. Nancy Shaw is known to have been born in Cambridge, New York. Her father is identified by the fact that there were only two Shaw families in Cambridge, New York, in the 1810 Federal Census when Nancy was about 4 years old. The first family was that of William Shaw whose household did not contain any daughters under the age of 10. The second household was Gideon Shaw whose household had 2 females under the age of 10 (Nancy and her older sister Sally?). Also, Gideon's will in 1821 mentioned that he had minor daughters, but the only daughter he mentioned by name was Sally because she was already married and had received her inheritance. Nancy would have been about 15 at the time of the will. Gideon died in September 1823 and Nancy married just three months later at the age of 17.
