      Pierre Auguste Chouteau's mother had a long term affair with Pierre Laclede dit Liguest who was the founder of the City of St. Louis. The affair resulted in four illegitimate children which included Jean-Pierre. Since his mother was still legally married, Jean-Pierre took the name Chouteau instead of that from his biological father.
