Who was John Proctor?
John Proctor was baptized at Assington, Suffolk, England, on October 9, 1631, the son of Great Migration immigrants John and Martha (Harper) Proctor. The family arrived in New England aboard the Susan & Ellen in 1635.
In 1692, John Proctor was accused of witchcraft. His wife Elizabeth (Bassett) Proctor was also accused of witchcraft a short time before him. Both were convicted and sentenced to die at the Salem Witch Trials. However, Elizabeth was pregnant and had her sentence postponed until after the baby was born. John was hanged on 19 AUG 1692. Elizabeth was eventually given a reprieve and was not executed.
